Non-duality means no-duality (Sanskrit: a-dvaita), the absence of separations. This openness forms the core of every spirtuality and mystical truth. But what is non-duality precisely? This new book from Douwe Tiemersma covers that. In his previous books non-duality held a central place, but now he show us step by step what non-duality means in your own experience. Everyone appears to know and value the experience.
“When relaxarion arises, the separations between yourself and the other disappear. Then wholness exists and the disappearance of conflicts. As borders disappear, happiness arises by itself. Everyone knows this happiness, even if it is only in the notion of sensing its absence. Then there is the striving to rediscover it once again.”
Douwe Tiemersma points toward this relaxation and that happiness and towards many other elements so that the reader can recognize non-duality in their own experience. Then an increased awareness of the openness without separations that was always, already present arises, but which never received the status of true reality. When the relativity of the world of separations and the value of the fundamental openness becomes clear, the dimension of non-duality can remain open in the individual being-experience. This then is about a 'direct path' of living insight, which has great practical consequences.
Non-duality is present in all great religions and world views. In Advaita Vedânta, the Indian current which traces itself back to the ancient Upanishads of the 8 – 6 century BCE, the non-dualistic vision is elaborated into a philosophy. Also in Buddhism and Daoism and in the Jewish, Christian and Islamic mystics the non-dualistic vision is present as the highest truth: the highest reality is that in which there is no duality between the 'highest' and the core of self-being, the essense of everything and everyone.
The book is comprised of spontaneous introductions and discussions with people who sought insight into non-duality by asking for descriptions or explanations. The recordings which were made and transcribed form the most important material of this book. Together with short pieces of poetry they form a fine approachable book about a topic that everyone seeks.
Dr. Douwe Tiemersma was professor of philosophical anthropology and intercultural philosophy at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Now he teaches at the Advaita Centrum in Gouda, where his activities in the area of non-duality (advaita), yoga and meditation are brought together.
